RALPH R. SAFFORD (“Randy”) is a founding member of Safford & Baker. Born in Detroit, Michigan (March 29, 1949), Randy has been admitted to practice law in Michigan since 1974. Randy received his undergrad degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (B.A., 1971; Phi Beta Kappa; James B. Angell Scholar), and his law degree from Harvard University (J.D., cum laude, 1974). Randy practices in the areas of general business law and commercial transactions with a focus on employment law and commercial litigation, as well as copyright, publishing, and computer law.

DONALD H. BAKER JR. is a founding member of Safford & Baker. Born in Baltimore, Maryland (April 25, 1958), Don is admitted to practice law in North Carolina (1983) and Michigan (1987). Don received his undergrad degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (B.S., 1980), and his law degree from the University of Michigan (J.D., cum laude, 1983; John Motley Morehead Scholar), where he served as Research and Executive Editor of the Michigan Law Review. Beginning his legal career as a law clerk to Honorable James Dickson Phillips, Jr., United States Court of Appeals, Fourth Circuit, Don practices in the areas of general business law, commercial transactions, and taxation, with a focus on venture capital/capital formation, publishing, copyright, and computer law. Don has been an Adjunct Professor of Taxation at Walsh College since 1989. Don speaks Spanish and Portuguese.

MATTHEW W. BOWER is an associate attorney with Safford & Baker having joined the firm in 2003. Born in Royal Oak, Michigan (August 19, 1972), Matt has been admitted to practice law in New York since 2003 and Michigan since 2004. Matt practices in the area of general business and commercial transactions with a focus on copyright, trademark, ecommerce, publishing, entertainment, Internet law, and other areas of intellectual property. He served as Chair (‘08-’09) for the Arts, Communications, Entertainment & Sports (ACES) Section of the State Bar of Michigan and is an active member of the Copyright Society of the United States of America and Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts and Culture. Matt received his undergrad degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (B.F.A., Theater, 1995), and his law degree from Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, New York, NY (J.D., cum laude, 2002), where he served as Editor-in-Chief of the Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal. He has lectured on intellectual property issues for the Library and Information Science Program at Wayne State University, ArtServe Michigan’s Services Programs, VSA Arts of Michigan, the Institute of Continuing Legal Education (ICLE), the Ann Arbor Film Festival, and most recently at CBS Radio’s Michigan Makes Movies Expo.
